What Tennis Racket Should You Be Using?

There are three basic racquet categories in the market today. Which one is right for you? That really depends on factors like your playing style, your physique, and your preferences.

Power Racquets (also called Game Improvement Racquets)

This is the terminology used by manufacturers to refer to their power-oriented racquets., which feature extra large to super-oversize heads that measure anywhere from 107 to 135 square inches. They are lightweight at no more than 9.5 ounces. Power racquets also tend to bestiffer, longer (around 27 to 29 inches), and head-heavy to retain weight in the hitting zone. Game improvement racquets are ideal for players who have slower and shorter swings and want more power.

Tweener Racquets

These models offer medium power and generally appeal to intermediate as well as advanced players who seek enhanced maneuverability. They offer a mix of features from power rackets and control rackets. These models are often on the lighter side (anywhere from 9.5 to 11 ounces). They can be slightly head-light or slightly head-heavy. Heads are 95 to 102 square inches. ‘Tweener racquets are usually extended length (around 28 inches).

Control Racquets (also called Player’s Racquets)

Models in this range are typically used by high-level club, professional, and college team players. They are typically heavier at 11.5 to 13 ounces or more, with smaller heads that measure 85 to 98. Control racquets are also thinner, with flexible beams. They are head light for ultimate maneuverability. These low-power racquets are designed for those who produce their own power and want a racquet with more control. They come in standard and extended lengths.
